EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION FOR TELECOMMUNICATORS The Elizabethtown Police Department Telecommunicators are civilians trained in both dispatch skills and telephone answering tasks. Their duties include taking calls for service by answering 5 phone line calls to the Elizabethtown Police Department, monitoring two 911 call stations, taking complaints from citizens who walk in to the Police Department. They also dispatch calls for service to mobile patrol officers and monitor the other city service departments during emergencies. Starting pay for Telecommunicators is $ 9.50 per hour. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis at the City of Elizabethtown Police Department 300 South Mulberry Street. To be eligible for hire, an applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and have the experience providing the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job. Experience with police dispatching or other 2-way radio or telephone communications equipment is highly preferred as is experience handling multiple tasks, including receiving and referring a high volume of telephone communications in a busy and/or hectic work environment. All Telecommunicators are required to live in Hardin County or move into Hardin County within six months of being hired. Applicants must pass a Telecommunications Operator written test, background check, oral interview, psychological exam, and polygraph exam. Applicants are subject to the same background investigation as police officers. Upon being hired the new Telecommunicator must beable to satisfactorily complete training for the computer aided dispatch system within six months from the date of hire. The new Telecommunicator must be able to complete a 4 week Basic TELECOMMUNICATORS Academy in Richmond, Ky to receive DOCJT certification for telecommunications. After completing the DOCJT state training, telecommunicators are required to complete 12 weeks of Elizabethtown Department Communications Training with a Communications Training Officer (CTO). Applicants selected for hire will be subject to a drug/alcohol screen test.
