Crackdown on Teens Who Don't Buckle UpWhen violence hits our schools and children die, we hear a national outcry. It's time that our nation express similar outrage about the more than 4,000 teens who die in traffic crashes each year. Clearly our teens are at risk. Fatality rates for teens are twice that of older drivers, and the risk of crashes for teens is four times that of older drivers. That is why the Elizabethtown Police Department is participating in Buckle Up Kentucky, the largest-ever nationwide crackdown on drivers who don't buckle up and don't buckle up children. This year, law enforcement is placing special emphasis on teens. From November 25 - December 1, officers will sharply intensify enforcement of seat belt and child passenger safety laws, with "zero tolerance" for violators. During this enforcement blitz, we will conduct saturation patrols using daily increased enforcement and ticket drivers who violate these traffic safety laws. Buckle Up Kentucky is part of the Operation ABC Mobilization, and we participate in these crackdowns because they work. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes are still the leading cause of death for 15-20 year olds. Since the Mobilizations began, national belt usage is at an all-time high of 85 percent reached in 2010. This is a gain from the 84 percent in 2009.
